I’m working on a question that keeps showing up in modern organizations: why our systems get more capable every year, yet decisions often feel harder to make.

Processes, tools, and AI perform better than ever. They optimize workflows, generate options, and produce correct answers.

And still, in many situations something essential is missing: a sense of orientation.

My sense is that we are not facing a productivity problem, but a problem of meaning and coherence. When everything becomes optimizable, what cannot be optimized suddenly matters: purpose, direction, and the internal consistency of decisions.

AI is not the cause of this tension. It acts more like a catalyst. The better machines become at generating text, options, and recommendations, the clearer the question becomes: what are we actually doing this for?

Many AI debates focus on control, safety, and risks. Those questions matter. What is often missing is another layer: how do we design systems in which people can orient themselves — not merely function efficiently?

This has consequences for work, product development, and organizations. It may no longer be enough to make software usable or to keep optimizing work.

Systems need to provide orientation for decisions, enable coherence between goals, actions, and evaluations, and keep early contradictions visible instead of smoothing them away too quickly.

That is uncomfortable. It isn’t easily measured or scaled. But I have the impression a central bottleneck is emerging right here.

This is the interface I work on — not with ready-made answers, but with the question of how clarity can actually emerge in complex situations.
